As we all know, the teenage years can be a time of increased freedom, independence and opportunity, but also a time for the challenges that accompany those transitions. At the Rift Valley Children’s Village, our family has over 40 teenage boys and young men finding their way.

We’re looking for someone who can guide our teenagers through these challenging years and encourage them to think big for the future of their communities, country, and themselves as they strive to become responsible and respectful citizens.

COUNSELOR AND ROLE MODEL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establishing a positive rapport with the teens in our family while maintaining a professional relationship, respecting boundaries, and serving as a role model;
  • Maintaining an environment in which the needs of our teens are addressed in a manner that is comfortable, motivating, and secure for them;
  • Developing relationships as a mentor for our teens in a manner that prioritizes respect, honesty, non-judgment and empathy;
  • Assisting our teens in their adjustment to more independent living in the Young Men’s’ houses upon entering secondary school;
  • Working with social work staff to design and plan activities and programs for our teens that fully integrate them with the greater RVCV community and also informal training sessions to develop their life skills and help them prepare for their future;
  • Contacting the appropriate staff member promptly regarding issues beyond the scope of this role.

HOUSE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Living in one of the Young Men’s Houses and offering supervision and support in the evenings and during school breaks;
  • Assisting in the handling of all emergency situations (health, safety, fire, etc.);
  • Encouraging teens to maintain clean and neat living areas;
  • Addressing and reporting all maintenance issues.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The perfect candidate will be willing and able to:

  • Use their experience as a camp counselor, Resident Assistant, or similar role, to lead youth;
  • Stand strongly behind the mission of the Tanzanian Children’s Fund and their belief in the importance of supporting our youth;
  • Communicate well in group and individual situations;
  • Establish rapport with a wide variety of people, especially teenage boys and young men;
  • Quickly evaluate crisis situations and respond appropriately;
  • Assist staff members, kids, or visitors with activities, programs, and responsibilities outside of what may be thought of as “their job”;
  • Remain flexible and in good humor;
  • Work patiently with a moderate noise level and constant interruptions;
  • Be a self-starter and be comfortable and motivated to take initiative;
  • Adapt to non-traditional work hours;
  • Live in a remote, rural area without some of the daily comforts to which you may be accustom.

Note: Interns are responsible for their own travel expenses including their flight, transport, and visa/residence permit requirements (RVCV staff will assist with the residence permit application process and scheduling of in-country transport).
