Director of Finance and Operations

The Tanzanian Children’s Fund (TCF) works to eliminate poverty and improve the lives of marginalized children and families in the Oldeani area of northern Tanzania. With an annual budget of approximately $3 million USD, our goal is to ensure that all children and families in this region have the opportunity to lead healthy, secure, and fulfilling lives. Through four programmatic areas - a children’s home (Rift Valley Children’s Village), a health clinic, educational partnerships with local schools, and an economic opportunity program - we endeavor to provide a community of 10,000 with all the tools, systems and opportunities they need to find a path out of generational poverty.

TCF is seeking a detail-oriented, organized, and adaptable problem-solver to join our team in Tanzania. This is a full-time contract position, responsible for overseeing daily financial operations. The Director of Finance will be a member of the senior leadership team with a direct relationship with the Board of Directors. Due to a continually changing work environment and the evolving stage of TCF, duties of this position may change during the period of employment, following mutual agreement between the Director of Finance and the Tanzanian Children’s Fund.

Responsibilities of the Director of Finance will include, but are not limited to:

Financial Management:

● Manage all financial activities of the Rift Valley Children’s Fund in alignment with financial protocols

○ Track cash flow; monitor bank and cash on hand balances

○ Conduct monthly and quarterly audit of accounts ensuring sound financial standing

○ Prepare annual budgets; collaborate with the Senior Leadership Team to reach final drafts that align with program needs and available resources

○ Produce monthly cash requests

○ Monitor actual expenditures; alert the Senior Leadership Team of any changes from budget(s)

● Collaborate with program leads to evaluate budgets and manage financial activities for the following programs:

○ Rift Valley Children's Village

○ Education

○ Health

○ Rifty Economic Advancement Program (REAP)

○ Construction and Capital Development

● Supervise Assistant Director of Finance oversee all accounting responsibilities and support Accounting officer when the Assistant Director of Finance is on leave

● Ensure financial compliance by:

○ Overseeing audit and taxes calculations (follow-up and payment of 5% withholding tax)

○ Government fees and requirements

● Produce financial forecasts and detailed budget projections for expanding programs

Capital & Logistics Management:

● Develop and refine operational systems for maintenance and construction in collaboration with the Director of Construction and Maintenance

● Develop detailed project budgets for all capital and maintenance projects

● Develop timelines for annual capital and maintenance projects to ensure sustainable development

● Oversee the Director of Construction and Maintenance in development contracts for capital expansion, ensuring they align with project budgets and follow construction protocols

● Ensure timely payments for improved cash flow

Resource & Purchasing Management:

● Develop and oversee systems for effective purchasing and resource acquisition in collaboration with the Director of Resources

● Develop and oversee systems for effective inventory management in collaboration with the Director of Resources

● Support the Director of Resources in managing vendor relationships

○ Ensure timely vendor payments for improved cash flow

● Evaluate trends in supply costs, recommend purchasing strategies to reduce costs

● Oversee and support payroll functions

Rifty Economic Advancement Program (REAP):

● Develop and oversee systems for effective financial management of the economic advancement program in collaboration with the REAP Director

● Ensure effective utilization of new loan capitals and evaluate opportunities for program’s growth in collaboration with the REAP Director

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preference for Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or Community Development
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in a similar role
  • Minimum commitment of 2 years required
  • Experience in financial management or business development preferred
  • Proficiency in English required, proficiency in Swahili preferred
  • Candidate must be outgoing, friendly, easygoing, and open-minded to different experiences and cultures
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Team oriented and collaborative
  • Ability to thrive living in a rural setting in Africa
  • Must love kids! You will be working on a campus home to over 100 children!
  • Experience living abroad for six months or more is helpful but not required
  • Sense of humor and positive attitude
